Building State Capacity at the Intersection of AI and Talent

More than 30 states have formed Artificial Intelligence (AI) task forces, and Governors often list AI among their top priorities. There are a series of actions states can take to accelerate the roll out of responsible and productive uses of AI across core state government functions, but doing so requires a thoughtful approach to talent. That’s why Govern For America released the AI x Talent report: a research-driven roadmap to help states use AI to strengthen their workforce and deliver better services.

About GFA’s AI x Talent Project

Our research report began with interviews with state government IT leaders and other tech ecosystem experts from across the country. The team generated a six-step framework for integrating AI in ways that empower public servants and enhance government performance. As states roll out effective AI programs, they will need to attract and empower AI-native talent from the next generation to help spread AI efforts across government in the years ahead.

Contrary to popular perception, there is an excess supply of young, technically-minded talent interested in working in government. The problem is getting that talent into the right roles. GFA is exploring a pilot to offer informed, comprehensive, and dynamic support to state governments, using fellowships and other innovative staffing mechanisms to connect governments to emerging technology talent.
